Moonrise Jewelry is committed to sourcing its raw materials (gemstone beads and other components) from Fair Trade and ethical vendors. Our suppliers in Indonesia, Thailand, China, and Mexico are making a difference in their communities by:

We are especially proud of our Premier Eco-Jewelry Collection, with designs made entirely of ethically-sourced materials and Fair Trade Semi-precious Gemstones. These natural, untreated gemstones are closely tracked from the mine to our studio to ensure that each has been handled according to strict environmental and social protocols.

Our Fair Trade Gemstones include: Brazilian Amethyst, Mexican Fire Opal, Brazilian Citrine, Black Jasper from Oregon, Purple Sage Chalcedony from Nevada, Australian Chrysoprase, Mesa Verde Peridot from Arizona, Oregon Opal, and Wyoming Green Jade.

From the mining to the final polishing, our Fair Trade Gems are produced in accordance with progressive environmental protection standards. These gemstones are usually mined and collected by hand using basic tools, like shovels and baskets. Following best practice techniques, these mine operators are required by contract to:

Minimize disruption to the natural surroundings of mine sites
Protect vegetation to the greatest extent possible to reduce the impact on wildlife habitat
Protect streams, groundwater, and watersheds from natural sediment and potential pollutants
Restore and replant mine sites as closely as possible to their original conditions, once mining is completed

As consumers we can choose to purchase products that are made in accordance with our values. Likewise, as designers, we take seriously our social responsibility to the workers who produce the raw materials we use to make our jewelry. All of our Fair Trade Gemstones are produced under fair labor conditions that protect workers' rights and pay a fair wage, from the mine site to the Chinese cutting factory. This ensures:

No child labor is used
No forced or exploitive labor is used
Safe and comfortable working conditions are maintained at all times

The cutting factory where our Fair Trade Gems are shaped and polished is a model workplace, praised by the Chinese government, with highly-skilled employees. Workers are paid three times the minimum wage and also enjoy paid vacation, annual bonuses, overtime pay, medical insurance, housing, and a food allowance.

In sourcing Fair Trade Gems, Moonrise Jewelry is able to maintain a tight chain of custody that significantly reduces the number of hands our gemstones pass through before arriving at our studio. This ensures that our Fair Trade Gems are not mixed with lower-quality stones that do not meet our strict social and environmental standards. Every step of the way, they are handled in compliance with local and international laws. Transparency of this supply chain guarantees that all international transactions are completed legally, and do not support terrorist or criminal activities.
